Phantom Forest
Installation at IX Art Park in Charlottesville, VA
Looking through the window of the garage door, the forest all around you stretches out into the vibrant night sky. The apparitions of birch trees bend and look back at you, a memory of the forests that once populated this area. They are created from collaging tissue paper, a material that began as trees before undergoing many levels of processing. Now, they are ghost trees.
Tissue paper collaged onto thin sheets of clear acrylic panels composes this garage door installation, allowing filtered natural light to enter into the space, casting shadows of the trees outside and changing with the sun. When I had the opportunity to update this garage door in IX Art Park’s immersive art gallery, I wanted it to become an extension of the magical space it’s a part of. The garage door turns into a portal- streching the already-present experience of being within the magical forest into the distance.
