Layered Histories of D.C.:
An Exhibition Designed for and Located in the Smithsonian Museum of American History
2022
How do we see public space?
Think of it as a highly layered experience that requires all of our senses. We must acknowledge the social, cultural, natural, historical, economic, political, and environment simultaneously in order to acknowledge and recognize other perspectives.
In this exhibition, three body-scaled shadow boxes visualize these complex relationships, presenting a deconstructed view of the public space just outside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Through the collaging of historic images, artistic renderings, and current photographs, we can begin to envision history as histories -- those seen, and those hidden in plain sight.
This introduction to the exhibition, written by design partner Nicole Starego, illuminates the heart of the project. My role in the design process was designing the 6ft tall shadow boxes and information panels, with the help of my colleague Michelle Tran, that hold the layered collages designed by my colleague Abdu Hussein.
